Alcoy Modernism Week hosted from September 17 to 23

Alcoy Modernism Week hosted from September 17 to 23

The other day while talking to a journalist about the upcoming Modernism Week in Alcoy, it became apparent that when it comes to organizing something like this, Alcoy doesn’t skimp on ingenuity, creativity, enthusiasm, and commitment. This can be seen through our staging of the most spectacular festivities such as the Moors and Christians of Alcoy and the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos on January 5th. In our small city of Alcoy located in the province of Alicante between mountain ranges and natural parks including La Font Roja and Serra de Mariola, the great value of our architectural heritage can be seen through the buildings of Art Nouveau style, Jugendstil, sezession, and more. Because of this, Alcoy was added to the Ruta Europea del Modernismo in 2010. With all this said, we want you to visit us for the week of September 17 to 23 where you will find a city filled with shops, activities, several exhibitions and completely staged in the theme. This will be an experience to remember. On the Turismo Alcoy website you can find all the information you’ll need about our city and the week’s program of events.

In its second year, the Modernist Fair of Alcoy for 2018 will be dedicated to the modernist sculptor, Lorenzo Ridaura (Alcoy 1871 – Anna, Valencia 1963).

Lorenzo Ridaura grew up between Barcelona and Madrid in a family of the Alcoy industrial bourgeoisie that owned the paper mill “Lorenzo Ridaura”. His father, Francisco Ridaura was mayor of Alcoy.

He began his studies in 1890 at the School of Art in Barcelona. He established himself in Madrid between 1899 and 1916 and came into contact with the sculptures of Madrid’s modernism. He received several prizes in national competitions. In 1916 he returned to his hometown, Alcoy, where he created the rest of his great work. Thanks to the industrial development and sociocultural links with high bourgeoisie in Alcoy, the Modernist style in this city located in the interior of Alicante inspired by nature and beauty was born.
